To make the consciousness of a personal “Self” cool you first have to define it. To do that you need a framework, a way of speaking to the question to begin with. In our conversation the human “Self” has an evolving quality that we believe we can visually represent in a meaningful way – both for the user and for society as a whole – and over time.

So, to make Self-consciousness cool you have to make the process of personal evolution entertaining, ergo cool. You have to make the thought-framework you are using, in our case, a human evolutionary-ontology, entertaining and cool.

Then, of course, you have to create a brand universe of products and services founded upon this “framework-as-ontology.” Not a simple nor obvious solution as this complex brand universe is born from a synergetic system of words, images and meaning-rich messages. And this system of words images and messages will grow out of this idea of evolving personal YOUnique-ness; TheSelf; and so on. AND all of this, schtuff… you know… must be truly kewl to fly.

The model, we call LeModel (Learning-to-Evolve the Model), consists of 6 core “state” or “process/operator” variables, facets or components. It was first created and presented to academic audiences as a new way to frame, and speak to the idea of, gift-centric Self-evolution. These first presentations occurred at Stanford University between 1983-1985. 

The character images are called LeToonz and were added to illustrate the phrases within LeModel in 1990-91. These “toon-ish” illustrations were done in collaboration with Jack Dempsey, a Chicago (Illinois/USA) artist.

From Left to Right and riding directly atop the wave (LeWave) we see AskYourSelf, LetGo, Ah-Ha, and DoIt.  Below AskYourSelf and on the circular pedestal, and in blue, is Flo, Across from Flo and in front of and below Ah-Ha is BeIt. BeIt is a comnbination of all the LeToonz characters. BeIt’s shapre is that of a chalice and a torid… see the donut around BeIt’s waist. The arms and legs spread up and out to form the shape of the chalice (bi-spiral vortices).

“Ah-Ha” (aka: “aha-moment”) is one of the LeModel “state” variables.

It has taken some time but all the LeModel linguistic variables have, as of 2010, become part of the consumer lexicon. This is not to say the utternace “ah-ha” did not occur before Oprah.  It is only to say that broad and commonly defined consumer awareness of what an “ah-ha” means and its “reality” as a shared  experience started with Oprah. The same with “Do-It” via Nike; and “Flo” or “Being in the Zone” via our star athlete Brand scripting (and Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi).

It took 1 human generation, approximately 25 years between 1984-2010, for all of the variables within LeModel to achieve this level of awareness and frequency-of-use in the consumer market.  One thing LeModel provides that we have yet to see is to show the natural interplay and relationships that exist between each of these core variables and how these operate within our lives.

The phrase “Do-It” is one of the “process” or operation variables within LeModel. Nike made “Just Do It” famous 1988. Once a phrase becomes has developed a certain permanence within our conversations with each other, or within our Selfs, we can assume a new level of awareness, or consciousness, has been achieved related to the idea, or meaning of the word or phrase and its emergent associations. In this case, “Do-It” became part of our common lexicon by the early 90’s and has persisted into present day conversation. Ah-Ha, or aha-moment, emerged in and around early 2010 and will continue to spread dramatically.

“Flo” is one of the LeModel “state” variables that made it to verbal ubiquity in the late 90’s under the umbrella of pop sport psychology with its early roots found in the published and later more broadly popularized work of Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi  (1985, 1989).

“Ask Your Self” we began to see in a number of Print, Radio and TV ADs and then TV comedy scripts such as Seinfeld in the late 90’s early 2000… to date each and every one of these phrase-as-variables has been isolated, or seen as separate by the consumer-mind. In our model they are unified as a system. Over time each and every one of these phrases has migrated across multiple social-semantic contexts.

Ah-Ha clicked-in-relevance with the consuming mind in the last quarter of 2008 w/Oprah: http://www.oprah.com/packages/aha-moments.html … and is now being used in media scripting, business, academic and product and service presentations and speeches around the world. Speaking to perceived value of a “phrase”, Mutual of Omaha even sued Oprah over use of the phrase “Aha Moment.”

So, how can we get kids to think, see and viscerally experience this idea that their SELF, and the Consciousness of their innate and evolving Self is actually amazingly cool?  This has always been the big question.

We have looked at the array of product domains and channels and age-groups by which to enter the market, knowing full well that the “thought-product” we are offering can manifest itself within any number of product domains – from fashions and accessories; to toys; to educational-tech to media/entertainment content (TV, Video, Music, Film); to mobile (dedicated learning and/or learning-game)  and social media apps… to knowledge, collective intelligence and semantic web apps…. and even to coffee cups. http://letoonz.wordpress.com/2011/03/30/letoonz-product-kids-8-13-lewave-wremoveable-letoonz-characters-and-embedded-songs/

We also know a number of these categories are inherently synergistic (Cool Mobile-App Suite meets new Brand Toys (assume younger demog) and/or Fashions + New “Brand” Music/Video, etc) and we have been looked at these scenarios as parallel devel waves.

For example, we know we can build an exciting game-culture (with sequel and age-migration legs) specific to human-evolution (EvoReVo!). Not a simple task. We could use a treasure hunt, mystery and puzzle storyboard format with a focus on the discovery (recorded ah-ha’s) of innate personal gifts and dispositions (The Natural-Self Revealed)… “Yea so.” & “…then what?” …the user asks. Well, it’s inherently Self-developmental and social developmental, or simply “social”… so we build in connectivity into the game… it is global multi-player treasure hunt, the treasure being “The Self” and Synergies-of-Self’s defined by who the users really are; defined by a significantly more authentic “Me.”

Further, with this game-generated data and experience, can you then build an evolving social (MP) culture – a social synergy culture connecting individually evolving human beings based on a new platform of individual innate (born-with) characteristics used to mirror personal and YOUnique evolution… If we can make it fun and insight-full then we win the first round.

Can personal evolution be perceived as “kewl” today? We think so. We believe this in part based on social and semantic events that have unfolded consistently and progressively over the last 25 years in the consumer global marketplace – these emergent linguistic patterns we believe speaks to a value-perception and readiness for the ideas behind: Self-Evolution, YOUniqueness, SELF-Consciousness; and even the emergence notions of an Ecology-of-Mind and The Human-Singularity.

It is an amazing that each and every LeModel variable has become more and more commonly used in “shared experience” conversation by human beings around the world starting around 1990 +/- 1 yr or so and LeModel was first created and presented to the “academic” public as a whole, dynamic and unified system of these same phrases in 1983/84. 

To date, the powerful connections of each of these phrases to one another has not been articulated, much less illustrated, outside of LeModel. We look forward to sharing these thoughts and insights.

Our Innate Significance Begets Our Natural Social Purpose – Prescient “EvoLog” circa ’93…

“EvoLog” is one of many names I have created and used since the early 1980’s to bring new energy and meaning into this subject and typically as an effort to describe an interconnected facet of this very large system of thought… and the now apparently unfolding reality.

I inc’d Psykon Achievement Systems in 1984 with “Psykon” as a word combination of “Psyche” and “Icon” and referring to “representation of the human mind and spirit.”

This meaning-play with words has always come natural for me. Good thing too. When one is describing a “large and new thing” this language-play becomes a serious necessity as a culture’s lexicon at any given time, and at that time a new large thing comes to life, is naturally incompetent to describe the quality of new-ness of that new and grand thing.

I have not seen this document, which I originally scribbled in 1993, for at least a decade (I am guessing here) and came upon it just the other day (January 5th, 2010) and sent it to my colleague Dr. Lou for grammatic tightening.  It is in thought as it was 17 years ago. I have writings from the mid 80’s that speak similarly and more specifically and am trying to get these into a useable format – old vr.’s of software.

I assume “Evolog” stands for “evolutionary logic” but it could have meant “evolutionary log” Star Date… blahdiddly… (but I doubt it knowing my own mind still).  Anyway the piece is dated – and at times not so very much. I hope you enjoy a few good thoughts and futuristic guesses made with this muddled text of mine – done with such great pecking labor. Yes, a grand and pitiful pity this.

If life is learning why didn’t anybody ever tell us that every time we learn something new we have an insight or an Ah-Ha.

Why was the nature of the most fundamental and measurable unit of life not made known to us?

The market, young and old, systems, individuals, and cultures alike, are screaming for the identification of, and bridge between, a universal language-for-learning and human creativity, and the evolution of social purpose and value.

Restated, we are screaming for enlightenment about the value of our insights over time, so we can better understand and then procreate our personal significance and social purpose in life.

We all learn the same way differently.

Despite the omnipresent nature of learning in human life no common thread, architecture, or universal language-for-learning has been articulated. Further, and until this time, the critically needed social architecture that bridges human and cultural learning to the creation of social value could not be developed. It is the development of one’s innate gifts, or natural competencies that begets personal and cultural significance. It is the unfolding of our significance that evolves our natural Social Purpose; the wonder of creative learning synergies and ultimately our Value as individuals and cultures.

Since 1985, I have predicted the emergence of the Learning/Evolution Technologies Industry.

The “pure-process” industry that cuts across all human endeavors and therefore markets.

This industry, as yet undefined by the financial markets, has gone from hundreds of millions to tens of billions in less than a decade. In the past generation, our Western oriented educational, self-development, or human potentiating, type products became available to the masses through the immense mail order publishing kingdom of audio and audio-video programs and more recently infomercials.

The exploding world of learning technologies for the development of the mind, body and spirit is physically evidenced by the proliferation of larger and larger shelf and floor space (500% or more) dedicated to the potentiating general education, psychology, health/wellness, spirituality, and business success type product sections in U. S. bookstores in the last 5 years alone. Eastern and Middle Eastern influences on our evolutionary product and service “content” are similarly evidenced. The world of human potentiating software and hardware is upon us with devices that provide myriad forms of bio-feedback; board games that analyze your dreams; self-hypnosis programs; and even food for thought as mind-munchies.

With the insurance industry funding Wellness (Mind/Body), and big business, schools and government buying Empowerment (Mind), we have sufficient evidence to support the readiness for the emergence of an industry that cuts across the social and economic development of all industries – the Learning/Evolution Technologies Industry.

Evolog, Inc. is positioned to midwife the birth of this revolutionary movement.

How we begin to achieve and maintain this leadership position is the real question and the inspiration for this proposal.

The Design (Purpose) of The Internet?

“I live’n’breathe the “how”, “why” and “so what” of the “design/purpose” of Internet as it relates to individual human and human systems (social) development, seen as an evolutionary process.

And specifically, I am most thoroughly sustained by considering and working on answers to the how, why and so-what of the Internet’s dynamic, direct and NATURAL role in supporting the how, why and so-what of individual human evolution and in parallel humanities synergistic evolution.

The most obvious reflection of the human mind is seen in our internet movement as it is most obviously reflective of both the connectivity nature of the human brain and the manifestion of that brain in the evolution of our personal Self and further in the evolution of the connectivity of personal Self’s globally.

My work and writing speaks to essential and magical pragmatism (Yes, pragmatics can be magical, ask Williams James) of the “why” of the internet” as a function of an innate and unstoppable, although seemingly detour prone, process of individual, innate and gift-based human evolution… and whole human-systems gift-based or gift-centric social evolution, and more specifically, the evolution of 1) an individual and naturally disposed and gifted human mind, and 2) all of these human minds doing that same thing.

… and a “why the internet exists” design/purpose founded on the innate NEED of all these evolving and inherently gift-driven-at-the-core human minds finding fuller and better and more synergy-rich “connecting” along the way.

My innately disposed preference is to think of the internet as simply a mind-mirror and interactive functional projection and manifestation thereof, the human mind. And over time, guess what, it actually looks more and more like a human cortex, this felt-work of connective tissue, of fibrils, like glial cells and dendridic networks, enmeshed and encapsulating directly, and indirectly and over time, all minds on the planet. And these minds “connected” – consciously, most not – are trying really, really hard – as it is what they are designed to do… is their ultimate and pre-ordained purpose – to be all they can be… to be innately and naturally gift-driven and along the way, trying very, very hard to more effectively resonate (socnet) and connect (socnet) to optimizing “partners” along the way, and over generations of our humanity.

It is this fundamental process and direction of human evolving that feeds the evolution of da’Net itSelf, and reciprocally, the further evolution of the natural and innately disposed and gifted human Self.

Nice that the internet helps in all this, and was mirror-designed in fact, for that express purpose, whether we see it as such or not, i.e. it’s purpose within and without and pertaining to the unfolding unknown.

Hi Brian,

Nice blog comment. I am not familiar with Google wave yet but it sounds interesting. I am very interested in further understanding your thoughts about how we can work with technology that helps us to realize and represent our true self more effectively to others while helping us in the “yearning” area to work and communicate more effectively with others on our team or that have a common interest or goal. Many of today’s social networking site like facebook and myspace currently fall short in this key department but I’m sure they will all evolve based on user feedback.

In a complex nutshell (sorry) my interpretation of “Ecology-of-Mind” as a movement that affects each of us personally, our families, society, why and how we make money in the future, etc… concerns a framework bounded by three synergistic assumptions-as-realities:

1) The design and the development of technology is innately motivated by the design and function of the human brain.

2) This motivation is founded on our innate and natural need for a certain Mind-to-Mind and Minds-to-Minds and Mind-to-Minds quality of human connection and working and life relationships… that “quality” that motivates the mind to create technology to better connect each of us to the other as potent partnerships and collectives thereof.   A “naturally harmonic ecological system of minds”, a certain optimal global connectivity as human tapestry exists today, everyday and right now. This “EcoMind potential” is constantly and innately motivated to discover and produce fuller and more amazing human synergies – sooner, with less friction or barrier, more often, and maintain each for its fullest natural time.

3) The only element of the equation gone under-developed is us, our innate Self. The idea of a human being living their natural gifts from the get go. Not what we have done or do now but what we are born to do. This is the question we are considering now as a system of minds, led unknowingly by a world of minds, as we create technologies and software that helps us better known and see our innate, natural, real or TruSelf. A scary proposition really. Imagine if you failed at being all of you?

This is “The Great Yearning” we all have as a sentient a species. To be part of a potent web of meaningful work and people to do it with… to be unique and make a significant difference with our gifts, our nature, our Self.

This is, I believe, the most fundamental of all forces of human nature – outside of more essential human needs for food and shelter – to YOUniquely create and to do so with others. To evolve. The path is not without curves or obstacle.

An Ecology-of-Mind, if it were real, would demand the discovery, creation, nurturing, effective management and quality of human synergy founded on the clarity of each gifted human Self within the system.

It is the technology, software really, that moves us to insights and action about our Self that is my work…

We haven’t a clue really because we have yet to see this quality of human resonance and human connectivity and purposeful work output in action.

Those of us that have been on great teams know… they have been searching for the fix ever since, but it is more than this. Our awareness of our gifts is a huge step. Heck, an awareness of the fact that we have insights at the moment of insight itself is a huge shift in consciousness.

The proof of novelty. If I asked you to describe your innate and natural Gifts… you would be stuck.

The day you can and everyone else can – and we find that this way of objectively defining our innate Self’s is the new foundation of our dynamic and evolving online Profile – is the day we are connecting in ways we could not even imagine. And I imagine, it is this same day that we are all, as a world of people, resting a bit easier.

To date we have focused on all the various forms of ecology in the last 30 years, especially the last 10 years, all but the one most important to a truly self-sustaining and prosperous humanity. The Ecology-of-Mind is that last undiscovered country, natural resource gone unmanaged, fully developed, smartly maintained and fully funded.

It has been coming and will be coming now more like a Tsunami… big huge swells of evolving change.

“What kind of ????? are You?” The Amazing Yearning… for a Real, True, Unique Self.

I actually saw “Asian” fill the question marks in the above quoted title of a quiz on Facebook.

It was one of the hundreds of “What kind of ??? are you?” quizzes that have spawned into the online social worldsince 2009. You can “Self” defining quizzes such as “What kind of dog or drunk or animal or  seaweed… you are.”  Here’s a blog post almost 2 years later by someone else on seeing the same pattern: http://webhostblog.com/2009/05/facebook-quizzes/

I see these quizzes as a psychological phenomena in the marketplace. There appears an incredibly pervasive “need” to define one’s Self. Further, the jesting style in many of these Self-revelatory quizzes and then the sharing of Self-quiz results reinforces the high degree of sublimated yearning for validation – the need for some form of discrete personal description – of personal identity and the verification of personal meaning, worth and value.

Scary Amazing!

So, the yearning increases each day and brings us to the obvious question.

How do we SELF-Represent, and better yet, how do we represent our YOUnique-ness!?

More and more telltale “lingo” will anticipate an extremely exciting emerging market tsunami. It will come in waves over the next 10 years, with one discreet wave making many of us conscious of its arrival.

Ah-Ha!

This is one of the great multi-decade, era-waves coming to crash our life, family, business and technology shores. Actually it has been knocking since the beginning of human time… it is only now that this particular mass-movement can be born – that the technological and psycho-social readiness is in place to resonant and act.

(There are so, so many instantiation of this coming…)

The interpretive process-model by which humanity can see it’s innate and True SELF more clearly and over time…this is the great and emergent quest.

It is the ultimate purpose of technology – to serve the evolution of a uniquely and individually gifted and inherently and powerfully synergistic collective of humanity and over time… (IMHO)

Let us be conscious of that(!), and in the process, and for the first time, be able to make this idea of Human Consciousness actually cool and practical, best yet, embrace it through discreet matricies of measurable variables and patterns by which entrepreneurs can actually make money and we can actually our personhood as a Self-Evolving!

 The autopoietic possibilities involved in human and “HuSys” evolution and getting our arms around “healthfully” accelerating that process… naturally,

…this is THE next big 50-100 year deal.

How Much More Proof Do We Need Before We Known A “Movement” Exists?

After 30 years I have found that most of us are not “see-ers” but need to be shown.

As some of you know, I look for “proofs” as market and pre-emergent instantiations of this (my) work in two interconnected spheres: the existience of a tangible and literal Ecology-of-Mind, and what I have referred to since the 90’s as “Evolutionary Technologies.” (See G.E.T. The Vision – https://imonad.wordpress.com/2009/07/31/g-e-t-the-vision-defined/ )

Those proofs-as-indicators (tremors) show that a broad and deep and life penetrating movement is underfoot and that its’ emergence is more wholistic and interconnected than anything we have seen and known before.

I think this above event example (along with many others and in various forms) is just one more concrete representation of two emergent movements that are happening all around us, and acting jointly in a natural parallel and symbiotically process.

1) An emergent Ecology-of-Mind is becoming more apparent and technology is now showing just how emphatically it has been affected in feature, function and design through an unconscious mirroring and projection of the human mind upon it.
2) An emergent individual human and global cultural need and tools to satisfy that need is beginning to articulate itself – that being the need to come to know, as in more consciously come to know, our innate and natural SELF(s). Massive social-networking and social-gaming movement are obviously representative (both directly and inversely) of this intrinsically founded human effort, and the innate need of the “human being” to better know its’ true nature, its’ true Self.

In terms of market movements and transformations…stand way back and consider this… Is it not simply amazing that a applied neuropsych PhD may now find themselves building human behavior and adaptive and predictive perception/cognitive data pattern algorithms within a socnet or socgame newco or is in a back room at Google, FB, Hi-5, Microsoft or LinkedIn doing the same?! Don’t you find this career shift at all interesting!? I am guessing you have to have lived outside of the wave to see the wave, or long enough to know it is one of interconnected others in the context of time.

SELF-representation is a good first step, but the ontology of SELF-evolution is missing, and this is what I think I bring to the party.

There is always an inverse and the inverse here is the negative pressure results of not coming to better know, not coming to be more conscious of… our TruSelf.

I could easily proof the validity of my work by using an inverse approach, i.e. “…this is this way because of a lack of equal and opposite positive pressure that would look like this in the market and in our lives…”

But nobody buys those inverse arguments. Do they?
