Smart Space is Coming… and coming fast!

Smart Space Will Auto-Generate Human Synchronistic Events

Shopping aisles will suggest a cheese with that wine and even a possible date in aisle #3 who buys the same olive oil, pasta and ice cream we buy. Of course that person in aisle #3 may also now know who and where you are. The reactions to such data by both parties might be very entertaining to watch from the video monitors above.

This technology is here already. Have you seen the “Sonar” iPhone app?

Parking Spaces will know we have arrived –  Can there be any doubt where that is heading?

For starters our smart airport parking space might speak to us.  When it does it might say:

“Hello Mr. Hennessy. Your departing flight is currently on-time. Current security line wait time in International Terminal 3 is 45 minutes.”

Of course we will be able to ask “Smart-Spaces” questions, such as…
Q: “When will the parking shuttle arrive?
A: “5 minutes Mr. Hennessy. ”

Smart Parking Sensors _ @libelium

And “smart spaces” will obviously promote and sell to me. They will even appear empathetic, predicting our needs!

Airport hallway “Smart-Walls” will speak to us. To me these interconnected and contiguous “sensing” panels might suggest…

“You have time for a beverage Mr. Hennessy. Would you care for your Guinness at the bar coming up up on your left in 100 yards? I can order it for you now if you’d like.”

Did I mention that the audio tech exists that can pin-point the projection of sound, i.e. to you and only you as you walk down a hallway :-)? Perfect huh.

Kiosks everywhere will know us… the level of intimacy we will most likely control, but they’ll still know something about us if we are carrying a Smartphone and our devices are switched on.

Outdoor Advertising is already digital and real time... and becoming smarter everyday @ClearChannelOutdoor

And we have all noticed the appearance of DON (Ex: Clear Channel Outdoor’s – Digital Outdoor Network) where we see outdoor space displays or “faces” such as highway bulletin boards, walkway panels, airports, street “furniture” such as transit enclosures – all migrating to real-time digital and I have NO DOUBT will become individually, or group, personal-data interactive:

Now, speaking of big outdoor digital displays getting smarter and interactive, check out how people on the street are playing a game (in public) using their smartphones.
Their game-playing moments of fame are displayed on a huge digital billboard above a McDonalds. The game is called Pick & Play and if you last 30+ seconds you win a McD’s sponsored prize:

Social Game-Playing On The Big Outdoor Digital Screen. This smart-space knows who & where you are!

This is real-time interaction with a physical surface w/geo-location features all tied directly to your “person” via your smart phone…

(Think about it. I do. All the time. And it’s a love/hate thing for me.)

… and you can win an ice cream cone!

Incredible mass consumer social-psychological appeal, and great promotional platform and channel.

In our coming retail shopping experience Smart-Spaces will “know” us coming and going, and in the in-between.

So, you might ask your “Self”, where’s the risk?

I say, the risk exists in our habituation to the experience of this clever intrusion into, and dilution of, our privacy over time. From my window, our increasingly pervasive social-sharing produces a commensurate loss of privacy which then begets a certain thinning or speading of one’s very Personhood… a “diffusion of identity.”
From and Ecology-of-Mind perspective, we simply need to become smarter about our Self; to know more clearly who and what and why we are.
A more coherent “Self” can stand independent of context, as a significant and self-aware human being. Then we can enjoy the technology and support development directions that make sense to us while also fighting those applications that are not healthy.
Then the smart (and even learning-) spaces will serve our personal and social growth and development vs. only others.

I speak to these issues and other related matters throughout the Ecology-of-Mind blog; and propose direct social product and application solutions here:; and to solutions on a large-systems business scale here:

Critical Balance: The Human Singularity and The Technological Singularity

with one comment

The Evolution of the YOUnique Self is the Key in Creating a Balance between our Humanity and our Technology

A Scenario:

A tangible Ecology-of-Mind unfolds as more and more human connections occur globally. This dramatic acceleration of creative working and productive human synergies globally becomes a recognized, significant and measurable wave, but is still occurring within a very small percentage of the total human population. This relative mass of highly potent Hu-connections produce greater, and more productive, human “creative working” Synergy’s BUT there is a limit based on humanity’s own evolution.  It becomes known that this important wave of emergent human synergies can only spread to a greater percentage of the human population IF there is a dramatic increase in that human population’s ability to recognize, value and development their innate, natural and gifted Self.

Let’s assume this occurs, that this recognition and focused development of one’s Natural-Self begins to take hold, becomes a cultural mandate, becomes even “cool” at all age levels, and a central and organic “identity-development” thread within our educational and social worlds. We have now acclerated human evolution. Now, this process can then be visualized as a spiral-vortex with these now more proliferative Human Synergies happening around the globe and among a greater and greater percentage of the human population and over the coming two to three human generations.

Spiral Vortex

Emergent Singularity Visualized as a Spiral Vortex

This more intentional “Evolution of Self” is the basis for a viable and powerful Ecology-of-Mind.

I see this measureable and tangible Ecology-on-Mind movement as a Human-Singularity. EcoMind is then the key to generating the critical balance to the now emergent synergies occurring in parallel in our technological world. These evolving technological synergies has been given a name. It is referred to simply as “The Singularity.” (V. Vinge, R. Kurzweil)

This movement of discovery and development of our more “Natural Self’s” will lead to an acceleration of robust human creative working-synergies yet this idea of an Ecology-of-Mind is theoretical and conceptual to date (

Human evolution, as a movement (in colloquial fashion I refer to it as – The EvoRevo!), is not recognized as significant, or as an emergent marketplace or industry, although it is, in fact, happening all around us.

More importantly, our ability to recognize and then live our natural and innate gifts and dispositions, or our Natural-Self, and bring forward a more dominant force of resultant innate and powerful human synergies, is lagging severely behind the now recognized as emergent technology-synergy cycle – the now recognized, and named,  Technological Singularity:

I see two Singularities, one Human and one Technological, and they are destined to connect: two converging singularities – that of the human being as a potential and having an innate, emerging and natural Self, and that of individual technologies.  Each, as it approaches greater clarity and coherence produces natural synergies.  Each synergetic and emergent wave, illustrated as an spiraling-singularity, is capable of balancing the force of the other. The latter tech-synergetic wave-as-spiral is recognized, the former not so much.

It is the evolution of the, and our, individual, natural and innate Self, and by natural consequence the potential global human synergies this evolution would create, that lags behind in this dual-spiral/dual-singularity convergent possibility.  And this lack of maturation of the human-singularity both a individual “Self’s” and as a more whole system of synergetic Self’s, is what needs our immediate attention. Without providing human developmental balance to our ever accelerating technological world we, humanity, will be managed more and more obviously by it over the next 2-3 generations… and therein cease to see ourselves as just that, a humanity.

Speaking of Human Synergy… and work to be done:

I am looking for development synergy with others at is concerns 4 interconnected variables.

1) The idea of an inherent, emerging and objectifiable Ecology-of-Mind wave or EcoMind movement;

2) The Technology/Singularity wave as another unfolding movement;

3) The idea that these two wave fronts are part of a larger movement and are playing out in parallel because they are innately interconnected in a fundamentally complementary way; and

4) The missing human literacy (discovery and living of our YOUnique “Natural Self”) and inherent acceleration of the evolution of human synergy globally that “can” (and IMO must) strike the critical balance (in waves/vortices1 & 2).

2 Emergent Singularities Meet to become One

Critical Balance: The Coming Convergence of Two Complementary Emergent Movements

Visualized, I see this as 2 vortices moving towards their innate connecting moment, and once they make that connection, the topological equivalent would be a dynamic toroid. Unfortunately #4 is far behind in its development and this is the focus of my basic and applied theoretical work, and software and socnet app-systems development efforts (*See below link for app-suite discussion)

Assume that during pre-toroidal manifestation there are two spirals representing two convergent “waves” with the tangible coherence of each, as marketplace and industry identification, e.g.  as a recognized emergent industry) is represented the forward or more and more pointed tips of each spiral become more obvious, and as they converge one to the other… and produce a singular toroidal image.

What is the Distinction between Human Learning and Human Evolving… and how is Mobile Learning technology involved

leave a comment »

Evolution is quite distinctive from learning.  I have tossed and turned around the intersection of these spaces since graduate school Neuropsychology days at Stanford (Dr. Karl H. Pribram-advisor)… since 1984. The difference or distinction applies to a human awareness of our YOUnique “Self.”

The mobile space folds hu-connection. The folding of productive or operational space/time (e.g. productivity/time migration: smoke signals-2-letters-2-FedEx-2-encrypted/signature email-2-IM/Skype-2-MobileSkype) is also a byproduct of tech advances.

To learning-to-evolve is quite a bit different than to evolving-to-learn.  Meta-learning for example concerns the necessary cognitive abilities to make learning happen with intention, habitually, and to also, one hopes but not necessarily, to learn how we learn as unique learning and evolving human beings.   This is where the migration to learning-to-evolve as individuals and (ever greater potentialities of) synergistic systems of individuals begins.

Hu-Evolution, in my nutshell, starts with our natural genetic dispositions which are innate and distinctive for each and every one of us… this being the developmental foundation for what makes us “special” (our Purpose (and our core “learning” direction in life) is and should be based on our unique-ness) and therein how we can become more and more innately complete and therein more coherently (progressive potentiations of greater hu-synergy/time) synergistic with others.

We can only hope that all of our learning experiences move us in the direction of evolving our uniqueness as individuals; and from this movement do the same within and throughout global systems of individuals, e.g. teams, couples, families, companies, cultures.  Our life environments both trigger and nurture these innate and unique personal dispositions, or not, and to varying degrees between.

Mobile Learning can support Mobile-Personal Evolution only if it focused on applications that provide insight and support integrated cognitive, visceral and behavioral action in this regard. This is my life-work (

I am not sure you have noticed but there is a great and tangible yearning in the world right now for personal sense of what one might term a “true-self” – as one’s uniqueness seen and felt more clearly and coherently; and from this, a personal sense of meaning and purpose based on this fundamental foundation of the person.  (Oh, and this has nothing to do with our “character development” curriculum or much touted “self-esteem” thinking…  This is new territory).

I called this The Great Yearning.  You have all seen the explosion of quick (superficial) and “fun” self-evaluation quizzes.  For example: “What kind of drink are you?”, “What kind of Asian are you?” (I kid you not),”What kind of Soul are You?” (, etc, etc.  This is a real indication of, and reaching-out for , “a  learning” that the market of human beings is screaming for help with.

More than ever before (at least now quantifiably manifest within the soc-net app space) the question of genuine-ness, and by natural extension, a more genuine quality in human-connectivity is being spoken of, both directly and indirectly.  Learning what makes us for a “genuine” human being  is no different than learning, and then living (daily), the who, what and why of each of us… what makes us YOUnique as individuals and by default, what we are here to do with our lives.

Mobile-Learning can be the platform for insights concerning personal evolution and natural gift-centric  and innate dispositional-centric assessment over time, day-by-day and these are mobile apps (as a suite) I am currently working on.

Without knowing who and what and why we are (with the how, when/where and so-what part of the question-matrix) … we unfortunately “learn” (mobile or otherwise) without the conscious, guiding foundation of our innate Self, and we tend to be learning and acquiring knowledge through material/symbolic (vs. significant or naturally-driven) motivations, and as a universal (almost) consequence evolve without intention or design, i.e. market and external driven learning motivations.

This has not been “crossed” this road yet, it is directly before us. It is the next frontier. Welcome to the Evolution-Revolution, or what my students chunked, and called, “The EvoReVo!”
